Many of you have been sending your kind thoughts and support for our Philippine Disaster Relief efforts. As of today you have generously donated almost $20,000. which will be matched by Canada government. Thanks for opening your hearts to share. I just wanted to update you on things there, which seem to be getting worse each day.
Yesterday we communicated with a friend who is out in a remote devastated area, but no help has come yet. She reported how people are frantic and have now reverted to looting and fighting over the few resources of food and water they have remaining. We understand that our Rotary friends have flown there in a military plane today to try and coordinate aid to them.
Other reports suggest many will be without utilities and hydro for at least one month. And due to the earthquake three weeks ago, many buildings cannot be used until engineers confirm their structural integrity. Image your hospital ward, set up on the street after hospital evacuation. Or image filing court documents in a tent on the front lawn of our courthouse.
United Nations Announcement
The UN just announced this morning a $25 million allocation toward disaster relief efforts in the Philippines.
You can see an aerial view of the devastation here:
I am attaching a flyer we have developed to share and explain our Rotary disaster relief fund, including online contributions by clicking here. Then choose Disaster fund in the drop down menu. Please share the flyer to your friends or other groups as appropriate. All donations will qualify for the Canada gov’t matching.
For your interest I will also attach a first report received from our Rotary friends in the Philippines. They are working night and day to assist those in desperate need. The navy and military are cooperating to assist in transporting goods.

FYI, PDG Ian Ferguson also has plans underway for a District 7080 fundraising initiative, hopefully to include DDF and Rotary Foundation assistance.
With thanks for your support and prayers for these desperate people, many of whom we will never know.
